Why Coconut Oil Should Be a Part of Your Daily Oral Hygiene Routine

A jar of coconut oil.
Are you familiar with oil pulling? It involves swishing a bit of oil around your mouth to help rid your body of more of the dirt, debris, and bacteria than it is able to by just brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash.

It takes a little getting used to because it is so thick, but once you are able to do it regularly, it is said to be incredibly beneficial to helping improve your overall oral health.

Benefits of Oil Pulling

When you begin oil pulling, you should use sesame oil or organic coconut oil that has been warmed to about body temperature. Then, your goal is to swish it around your mouth for 15-20 minutes, but this often takes a bit of time to build up to being able to do it that long.

Once you do it daily, you can expect benefits like whiter teeth, less inflammation of your gums, decreased cavities, and even less toxic buildup in the tissues of your body. There are some things that build up in the body that are oil soluble. By oil pulling daily, you are able to pull those substances out of your body, and get healthier.

The side effects of oil pulling are minimal, but they can include slight sensitivity increases when you first start doing it, and a bit of gagging when you first try it out. The more you do it, the less these side effects will be there, and the healthier your mouth, and your overall health, will be.

Contact our office about how to include coconut oil into your daily oral hygiene routine. They can tell you what parts of your teeth would benefit from the practice, and they can monitor how much change they notice in your teeth as you go.
