What Medical Conditions Can My Dentist Spot?

Posted on 7/25/2016 by Anthony M. DiCesare
A doctor holding up a sign saying diabetes on it.There are medical conditions that your dentist can spot from the tell tale signs in your mouth. What patients may be unaware of is that there are a range of health problems that begin in your mouth.

We can spot those signals that alert you to conditions that we feel you should examine more closely with your general practitioner.

Medical Signs

Signs that we can spot in your mouth which may indicate a larger issue includes:

•  Vitamin deficiencies: - Weakened teeth that fracture easily can be a sign of a lack of vitamin D. Bleeding gums can indicate a lack of vitamin C, excessive bleeding can signal a lack of vitamin K. Calcium and iron are very important to your dental health as well as your overall health.
•  Osteoporosis: - A dentist may be the first person to spot signs of osteoporosis. Signs of osteoporosis will include the severe loss of bone density in your mouth. This may mean bone loss, tooth loss, dental appliances not fitting right, or even gum disease
•  Diabetes: - Dentists can spot the signs of diabetes in your mouth. The health of your gums and problems with dry mouth can be telling signs indicating diabetes.
•  Oral Cancer: - Part of your regular dental exam, your dentist will look for signs that may indicate oral cancer. Though generally associated with smoking, oral cancer can affect anyone. Caught earlier, the better.

Besides medical disorders, your dentist will check for wear on your teeth due to bruxism, or from daily habits such as exposure to tannic acid that's found in coffee and soda. Your health is our business, your mouth is an open cavity into the rest of your body, and its health is important.

Please contact us if you have any questions about your oral health.
