Why Does Your Mouthwash Burn?

Posted on 6/27/2016 by Anthony M. DiCesare
A man using mouth wash that is burning.Do you have to brace yourself every time you use your mouthwash in order to prepare for the burning sensation? Like most people, you might believe that the alcohol found in your mouthwash is the culprit, but in reality, this sensation most likely comes from the essential oils. While alcohol can dry out the mouth and might enhance the burning sensation, it isn't the problem.

Essential Oils in Your Mouthwash

There is one type of mouthwash that really gets a bad reputation when it comes to burning - Listerine. That's because Listerine uses a recipe of essential oils that are effective at killing bacteria and fighting plaque, but they also irritate the inner tissues of your mouth. This is where the burning comes from.

It appears that Listerine's manufacturers have heard the complaints about the burning sensation consumers experience when using their product. For that reason, they have created Listerine Zero, which claims to be a less intense option that doesn't contain alcohol. In reality, its lower intensity is a result of having fewer essential oils.

Alcohol in Mouthwash

As long as we are talking about mouthwash, you may be interested to know why it is even added to your rinse. If you think it is there to fight plaque, think it again. In reality, alcohol is present to serve as a solvent that will keep all of the other ingredients dissolved within the solution.

If you are experiencing burning with your mouthwash and aren't sure of the cause, you should make an appointment to see your dentist. It is possible that you may be experiencing tooth sensitivity that could be making your teeth more vulnerable to the effects of the mouthwash.
