Why is the Inside of Your Mouth Peeling?

Posted on 3/17/2016 by Anthony M. DiCesare
A woman covering her mouth because, she’s suffering from a peeling mouth.Have you noticed that the inside of your cheeks are appearing to peel? There could be a variety of causes behind this issue, so it is important to visit with your dentist to get to the bottom of the problem.

A Toothpaste Allergy

One of the most common causes of peeling inside the mouth is an allergic reaction to toothpaste, and fortunately, this is a fairly easy problem to correct. The problem most often results with whitening toothpaste, and if you suspect that this is causing your peeling, simply switch to a different brand.

Gum Disease

Your mouth peeling might also be the sign of gum disease, especially if you notice that the gums are starting to peel away from the teeth. Both gingivitis and the more serious periodontitis will make the tissues of your gums become inflamed, and if you fail to treat the issue, you may notice that your tissues start to peel.

Canker Sores

Canker sores appear as small white lesions, and as they heal, the gum tissue around them could peel. While we all get canker sores from time to time, mouth ulcers that reoccur or don't seem to go away on their own could be the sign of a problem.

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome is a rare and serious condition in which peeling inside of the mouth could be a symptom. Likely, this symptom is one of the last to appear, and you would have already experienced flu-like symptoms along with a red or purple rash across your mouth.

You'll need to see a doctor if you suspect that you have this condition.
If you have concerns about what is going on inside of your mouth, including peeling of the cheeks or gums, it is important that you contact our dental office. While the condition is most likely not serious, it is important to have it inspected to be on the safe side.
