Can a Tongue Scraper Help with Your Chronic Bad Breath?

These helpful tools can be found in almost any drugstore, and they have been praised by some individuals for their ability to eliminate or reduce bad breath.

Simply use it to gently scrape along the surface of the tongue, removing bacteria that could be causing your bad breath.

Research into the effectiveness of tongue scraping is fairly limited, especially when it comes to bad breath. Some studies have found that this treatment method does have temporary benefits for reducing bad breath, but more information is needed in order to determine if using a tongue scraper could provide any long-term assistance to people who suffer from halitosis.

One scenario in which using a tongue scraper should provide the most benefit is if you are living with a coated tongue. This condition is a little on the gross side, and it involves a buildup of dead cells, bacteria, and debris on the tongue. This is often caused by dry mouth, poor dental hygiene, yeast infection, or smoking.

Since so many bad breath-causing components are located here in mass quantities, getting rid of them can be a major benefit for your breath.

If you do choose to use a tongue scraper, it is important to remember that these tools should be used to complement your oral health routine, not to replace anything. To relieve bad breath, you will still need to brush and floss often and properly, and you'll need to visit your dentist for cleanings every six months.

If it has been a while since your last dental checkup, please contact us today, and let your hygienist and dentist know about your concerns regarding your bad breath.
