What's Hiding in Your Toothbrush?

Posted on 12/17/2015 by Anthony M. DiCesare
A pair of toothbrushes inside a glass jar.Your toothbrush is your number one resource when it comes to cleaning bacteria, plaque, and other germs off of your teeth. However, after you brush and give your toothbrush a quick rinse, are you really getting everything cleaned off? In actuality, there are a variety of germs hiding out on your toothbrush, and finding out exactly what is on there will probably be an incentive to start sterilizing your brush.

Certain viruses just love hiding out on the toothbrush, including the flu virus and oral herpes. The influenza virus can cause fever, chills, and body aches, so dentists recommend that once you get over this illness that you change out your toothbrush to prevent reinfection. When it comes to oral herpes, if you are going through an active cold sore outbreak, the virus can live for as much as a week on your toothbrush.

Fecal Matter

Consider for a second where you keep your toothbrush. More than likely it is in your bathroom, only feet away from your toilet. When you flush, tiny fecal matter particles can travel on water droplets through the air, so it is important that you keep your toothbrush far away from the toilet.

E. Coli

Going back to the issue of fecal matter, E. coli bacteria are often present to some degree. This bacteria can cause vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea, so it is important to sanitize your brush frequently in order to remove it from your brush.

Microscopic yeast can cause yeast infections when they are too prevalent in a single area of the body. In the mouth, a yeast infection is known as thrush, and it can be very contagious. If you are treated for thrush, you should be sure to get a new toothbrush right away to prevent reinfection.
