Consider Your Teeth before You Jump on the Juicing Bandwagon

A little girl drinking a glass of orange juice. There are a variety of health fads out there, and juicing is one of the most popular right now. Many people are choosing to juice as a way to improve their health, but they fail to consider how this trend might be affecting their oral health.

In fact, juices can be extremely tough on the teeth, mostly because of the high amounts of sugar and acid that are found in the drinks. Frequently consuming juices that are overly sugary or acidic can cause wear on the enamel, and this will put you at greater risk for developing cavities.

If you do choose to start juicing, it is important to consider the ingredients that you are blending up. Instead of focusing on fruits, consider making leafy greens the main component of your beverage. Leafy greens will support strong teeth and bones because they are high in calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, and since they aren't high in sugar, you won't need to worry about the negative impact on your teeth.

When it comes to adding fruit, do so sparingly. Add ripe fruits, as fruits that aren't quite ripe will have a higher acid content. You can also include cranberry juice, as fresh cranberries have the compounds that will keep the bacteria that cause cavities from latching onto your teeth. If you don't have fresh cranberries, add in a splash of cranberry juice.

The next time that you are whipping up a new beverage in your blender, ask yourself some important questions. Determine if anything that you want to add is actually adding nutrients to the drink and whether or not your teeth will benefit. If there is too much acid or sugar in an ingredient, consider leaving it out and adding more vegetables.
