Denture Treatment Options

At Aspire – Implant Dentistry Center, we offer a variety of treatment plans for our patients who are needing to replace multiple missing teeth. The treatment that Dr. DiCesare prescribes will be highly dependent on what care you are searching for, and what Dr. DiCesare identifies you need based upon the structure of your jaw, the state of the bone in your jaw and other health factors. We avoid a “one-size-fits-all” approach to your smile; instead taking the time to explore the options with you, answering your questions and ensuring that you are fully comfortable with the treatment plan before moving forward.

We’ve included some information here below, but invite you to schedule a consultation with Dr. DiCesare for any questions or concerns that you may have.

Removable Denture Treatment

A removable denture is one that you can take in and out of your mouth at any time of the day. It is a more traditional treatment option for patients with multiple missing teeth, and we explore the advantages and disadvantages of the denture below.

Advantages

  • Relatively inexpensive tooth and gingival replacement
  • Provides lip support, and retains your natural face structure (avoiding the sunken face look)
  • Easy to remove and clean outside of mouth

Disadvantages

  • Can be uncomfortable — may cause sore spots on gum tissue
  • Difficult to eat certain foods, such as apples or steak
  • Accelerates bone loss
  • Often requires reline to improve fit and comfort as bone deteriorates
  • Difficult to speak as the removable denture may move
  • May require creams or adhesives to reduce mobility of denture
  • Approximately 10% functionality compared to natural teeth

Removable Denture Over Implants

This option uses two implants at the front of the mouth to “snap” in and out the denture for cleaning. However, because the implants are only at the front of where your natural teeth would be, patients still experience the “rocking” sensation that occurs between the front and back of the denture.

Advantages

  • Improves stability and functionality to 60% compared to natural teeth
  • Relatively inexpensive tooth and gingival replacement
  • Provides lip support
  • Easy to clean outside of mouth

Disadvantages

  • Uncomfortable — may cause sore spots on gum tissue
  • May still move when chewing or speaking
  • May require relines to improve fit and comfort as bone deteriorates

All-On-4® Implant Retained Denture

The All-On-4® design does not allow for the implant to be removed, but retains the denture in a solid, secure manner in the jaw — placed over 4 implants. This patented design is only available through Nobel Biocare dentists.

Advantages

  • Improves functionality to 90% compared to natural teeth
  • Eliminates need for bone grafting
  • A fixed temporary is placed the day of surgery
  • Replaces roots and teeth
  • Preserves bone and soft tissue
  • Never decays — 95% success rate over 30 years
  • Natural looking aesthetics
  • Allows you to eat the foods you want
  • Able to clean fixed implant bridge like natural teeth

Disadvantages

  • Time (healing and restorative)
  • Surgical procedure

Implant Supported Crowns and Bridges

This option provides the highest natural function of your replacement teeth, and looks the most natural of all the above treatment options.

Advantages

  • Resembles natural teeth in that many times it can be made with individual teeth or smaller sections
  • Replaces teeth and roots
  • Allows you to eat normally

Disadvantages

  • Highest cost option
  • Often needs bone grafting and extensive healing
  • Treatment time can be over one year
